It is generally accepted now that life in America will never be the same, that we will experience change in our national life and our personal lives that will be profound and far-reaching because of the unspeakably horrific events of September 11, 2001.  Some of that change we already see clearly as we gradually comprehend what has happened to our country and the world.  Some of that change will only be known as events unfold in the near and distant future, and so our prayer is that as America engages at home and in the wider world abroad in ways unknown to us now, the work that we all do may be guided by wisdom and sustained by firm resolve and ultimately serve the cause of peace and justice.

One change that America is experiencing right now is a realization, as it is played out in New York City for all the world to see, of the depth and breadth of the volunteer spirit in our country.  This heightened awareness of the sheer numbers of people and the commitment they bring to helping their fellow human beings in time of crisis is nothing short of awe inspiring.  There is a deep abiding goodness in the people of this country and our foundation is strong.  Let us build on that.  It is indeed a privilege to be a volunteer in America.
